Sport and physical activity grants for older people

Go for Life has launched its annual grant scheme for older groups and clubs. Almost €300,000 has been allocated to this year's scheme, organised by Go for Life and the Irish Sports Council. Groups and clubs of older people all over the country can apply for grants to spend on equipment, to get an instructor in for a few sessions, or to organise a sports fest in their area. Typical amounts awarded are between €300 and €700 and the grants generally go to active retirement associations, senior citizens clubs, ICA guilds, day centres, and community centres.

American doctor dies at base of Reek

A gynaecologist in his forties who was based in Chicago died as he began climbing Croagh Patrick on Tuesday. Dr Thomas Connolly, who was accompanied with his wife, Dr Kim Connolly, and a number of others, collapsed and died at the statue of St Patrick as he started his ascent around midday.

Foróige Knocknacarra launches air freshener to highlight danger of passive smoking in cars

The 'Health and Wellbeing' members of the Foróige Knocknacarra Youth Development have launched a new air freshener which they have created to highlight the issue of passive smoking in cars. This project was done as part of the X-HALE Youth awards, an initiative created by the Irish Cancer Society which has set out to encourage young people to address the issue of smoking in their own communities.

County wide anti-smoking policy on the way

The members of the Cultural, Education, Heritage and Corporate Affairs SPC of Mayo County Council put in motion the first steps to bringing in a new council backed county wide anti-smoking policy. Director of services for Mayo County Council, Joe Loftus, told the members he was looking for them to recommend to Mayo County Council that all buildings over which the council have control, including playgrounds and play areas for children, be declared smoke free zones, to be supported by appropriate signage and notices.

University of Limerick offers fitness instructor certification in Galway

University of Limerick will be running a fitness instructor course in Galway for people who would like to train to become a fitness instructor or personal trainer. The certificate in exercise and health fitness is awarded by the University of Limerick and is the only university accredited fitness qualification in Ireland.
